1/2 Day
Journey : Symonds Yat (west) to Redbrook
Days Canoing Distance : 7.5 miles
You
paddle downstream through the scenic valley where the river runs between
Symonds Yat West on your right and Symonds Yat East on your left.
Passing by The Old Ferry Inn on your right and The
Saraceans Head on your left.
After
approximately 1.5 miles you get the thrill of riding through the Grade
2 rapids. A great experience.
With the excitement over you can now
sit back and enjoy the scenery at your own pace. On your right is
the Biblings campsite (used by authorized groups only) you drift under
the Narrow suspension bridge used as a footpath.
Approximately 1.75 miles further on and you are at Hadnock
Island pass on the left side as not so weedy. Now the river winds and
runs parallel with the A40 for a short distance and the small bustling
market town of Monmouth nestles on the right bank. Monmouth town cannot
be seen from the river.
Landing stage on the right bank immediately past Monmouth
Rowing Club.
Continuing
on, you meander under a main bridge, approximately 0.5 mile later and
the River Monnow joins the Wye from the right. You now have to manoeuvre
around the rocky shallows. Something a bit different.
Approximately 1.5 miles on and you are nearing
your destination point at Redbrook.
Look out for your landing point on the left of
River just under the Bridge. Walk back over the bridge to The Boat
Inn: Phone - 01600 712615 where you can sit have a drink or bite
to eat whilst discussing your journey.
